What is a fire risk assessment?

A fire risk assessment is a way of assessing the risk of fire arising at the premises and causing injury to occupants.

Fire safety in the workplace is primarily the responsibility of the employer.

As of 1st October 2023, it is now a legal requirement under Article 9 of the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 to have a fire risk assessment for your workplace, regardless of how many employees you have. Prior to this change, FRA was only required if business had five or more employees.

For comprehensive Fire Risk Assessment has to follow but is not limited to points below:

• Identify hazards in relation to a fire in the workplace
• Identify those that may be harmed by a workplace fire and how this harm may occur
• Evaluate the level of risk created by fire hazards Record the findings of the fire assessment
• Suggest appropriate controls to reduce the risk of a fire in the workplace to an acceptable level

How can fire risks be reduced?

There are many ways in which the risk of fire can be reduced, from simple methods such as appropriate storage of flammable materials, to maintenance of equipment. It is also important that adequate fire detection and warning systems are in place as well as appropriate means of escape. All staff should be informed, instructed, supervised and trained in fire procedures and evacuation. Reducing fire risks ultimately requires good management.
